“Fifty-Four Hours commemorates my grandparents, Wally and Marian Anderson, who passed away a year ago this month, 54 hours apart. The oral history of their life stories is so rich and wonderful that it is impossible to convey here. I wish that I could take the time to tell them all to you, so you could know them in the way that I did. They were inspired. Theirs was an authentic love story with all the ups and downs. They learned to live beautifully. Each aspect of building this series of paintings reflects their influence and my relationship to them; it became an amazing marriage. I honour them here, and painting flowers finally makes sense. They passed a few days shy of their 73rd wedding anniversary.”
