Artist Description

Since Ian Rawlinson graduated from University of Saskatchewan Art department in 1992, he has explored older, traditional concepts of painting as craft.

Ian developed a series of nocturnes which culminated with the exhibition Night Watch, with David Hoffos at the Mendel Art Gallery in 2005.

Recently, Ian has focused on a new series of paintings, based on a nocturnal encounter with a large bull moose on the highway. As in the past work these new paintings, based on this ephemeral experience, contain an affect of mood, of otherness, but remain distinctly Canadian: sharp, with muscular geometry, acute in tonality.
