For 35 years Catherine McAvity has worked to evolve as a painter of landscape and other subjects, always looking for a personal voice in her subjects.
Catherine McAvity’s work has relied on the contradictions of impulse vs. structure, and working with the formal tenants of painting while embracing trust, intuition and her experience. McAvity tips her hat to history while working in a contemporary context.
Catherine McAvity attended the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1969. She then pursued a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia from 1969-1971, followed by a Fine Arts degree from the University of Calgary from 1971-1975. She attended the prestigious Emma Lake Workshops and the related Triangle Workshops in upper state New York in the 1980’s several times. Her work has been exhibited in private and public galleries from the early 1980’s, and her work can be found in many corporate and public collections.
