Elzbieta Krawecka lives in Toronto. She was born in Krakow Poland in 1971, and she developed an eye for old world aesthetics as a child. Later, her parents moved the family to Kuwait, exposing Elzbieta to a different culture and giving her an appreciation for travel.
Her painting style is a personal exploration of the transient nature of light and its potential to describe space in terms of movement. Based on the Old Masters glazing techniques, it is inspired by the nostalgia for Turner’s subtle treatment of light and space, Caravaggio’s dramatic use of tenebresco, Monet’s organization of tone and pattern, and the forceful energy of nineteenth-century Polish painters like Chelmonski, Gierymski and Kotsi.
She moved to Canada to pursue formal art training at the Ontario College of Art and design (OCAD) between 1989-1994. Participating in OCAD’s Off-Campus Program in Florence, Italy between 1992-1993 was one of the highlights of her education experience.
Krawecka has exhibited her work throughout Canada since 1997. Her distinctions include numerous artist residencies at the Pouch Cove Foundation and first and second prize at the Ontario Society of Artists Juried shows in Toronto in 2003 and 2002.
